Opinion: Is Odell Beckham Jr. Gay?

Odell Beckham Jr’s rise to NFL stardom has become one of social media’s most discussed topics–including his personal life and sexual preference.

Unquestionably, Beckham has become a lightning rod for many.

He puts on a spectacular show with his one-handed catches. But he also celebrates touchdowns like he’s performing at the BET Awards.

Every score is a ‘show-off’ moment which leads to a perception that Bekham Jr. is cocky, among many others.

In December, Beckham Jr. faced a 1 day suspension after a fistfight with Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman erupted during a game. There is speculation the fight stemmed from ongoing gay slurs being leveled at Beckham Jr, before and during games.

An accusation that is denied by the Panthers organization.

In fact, gay rumors persist to surround Beckham Jr as his fame continues to grow.

Michael Irvin, the Cowboys Hall of Fame receiver, spoke to the media last year in response to the alleged gay taunting.

Irvin said Beckham told him the Panthers were trash-talking at him with gay slurs and before the game taunted him with a baseball bat.

“He deals with it a lot. For some reason, everybody goes after him with gay slurs. He’s a different kind of dude. He has the hairdo out, he’s not the big muscular kind of dude. The ladies all love him. He’s a star. I wonder why people are going in that direction. It blows my mind. I told him he can’t let stuff that people say get to you,” Irvin said.

In all fairness to Beckham Jr. it is unclear if he’s ever been intimate with other men. It is also unclear how it’s anyone’s business who he’s dated or slept with.

He is entitled to present himself in whatever context makes him most comfortable, regardless if it makes his peers or sports fans uncomfortable.

However, it doesn’t mean some folks observing his presence off the field– most significantly on social media, don’t have a right to speculate on it either.

Beckham is a not a regular football player.

He is fast becoming a celebrity/sex symbol who can be seen sitting next to Vogue editor Anna Wintour at the lastest fashion show or hanging out with A-List celebs such as Drake and Serena Williams.

The following pics have all been linked to stories making an accusation or questioning Beckham Jr.s sexuality…

I didn’t even bother to include various clips of Beckham Jr’s heavily mocked ‘feminine’ dancing or horseplay among male friends.

As a sports fan (football, in particular) I don’t care nor believe Beckham Jr is gay. Even if he isn’t gay, I believe he can use the opportunity to become an advocate for more tolerance in football. He could say “Hey, I’m not gay but there is nothing wrong about being gay” But, of course, it goes beyond his sexuality and speaks more to our society’s preconceived notions of masculinity (African American masculinity, in particular) and blatant homophobia still exists in football.

Perhaps the bigger question is what actually defines masculinity or heterosexuality in sports today?

Is he being unfairly targeted by fans or has Beckham Jr. helped perpetuate the gay rumors surrounding him on and off the field?

Male celeb submission or request?

  1. There’s a lot of speculation about this and either way he can get it with a side of fries, a medium sized drink and a toy because I find him extremely attractive and always probably will just as long as he doesn’t do or say anything stupid

  2. You know he is the perfect example tho, as to why there is still so many closeted men, or so many men on the DL, and those who are just not ready to come out. Because look at this! Look at what they are doing to Odell. Who is going to sleep better at night knowing who he is sleeping with at night? (I mean, if it’s a man, ME personally but that’s another story) They are trying to figure this man out so they can put him in a category and therefore give him limits of what he can do and achieve. Society would like to fool us into believeing that they are accepting of us (gays) but that is a BOLD FACE LIE. As you can see society still feels like only a ALPHA hetero male should be considered to play sports as they exude the over all POWER or strength, as to being a GAY homo male which is looked upon as being WEAK and has no place in a world full of ALPHAS. It’s sad. It’s like their saying,”It’s okay if your GAY just don’t do anything that a MAN (alpha) should be doing. Wear dresses and heels in order not to confuse to public.” Same thing with the military.

  3. I honestly don’t get any real pings from him. If you’ve lived long enough in these times you realize that there are A LOT of heterosexual men who just like to look pretty. Like, it’s not something you can much use anymore to be sure. Every dude seems like a dandy, these days.

  4. They hating cuz he fine and sexy af without even trying. He is his own man in his own world who gives 0…I mean 0 fucks about what anybody thinks. His give a fuck account is overdrawn which bothers others. He attracts men and women he’s one one of those duded that intrigues people and stirs up things in other men and they aren’t comfortable with it. This man bothers no one. You don’t hear about gang affiliations, beating women, or anything else negative. Let this man live his life and he wants to fuck a few guys in the process so be it. Its not like other NFL players aren’t doing it

  5. Noneof those pics prove anything and actually some of the people like the one with the lightskin guy in the beach and snapback pic that’s actually his cousin people reach too much. People accuse every extremely attractive man as “Gay” its happened to every black attractive celebrity (Tyson Beckford,Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Justin Combs, etc) I don’t know why people like to call extremely attractive black men gay

  6. I feel like he is but i think if he comes out his career will never be the same …every gay man that has come out in sports just barely have a career!

  7. Does it matter? There are more concerning issues in this country than to to concern myself with the question about Odell Beckham Jr. Sexuality. I Believe the media bullies should leave him alone. Continue to dance, sing and have fun Odell Beckham Jr.

  8. So many excellent points made on this blog, kudos to everyone for keeping it real and classy.

Most times people think that because they want a person to be. He is such a cool young man who is enjoying his life and staying out of negativity. Personally I think it’s a way to tarnish his image and get him out of the way for a Caucasian man to be the more famous football player. He’s smart, talented, gifted, good looking and black, and in America………. That’s a threat
