Stunning actor Taye Diggs is making history on the Broadway stage this month as he begins a stint portraying Hedwig, a sassy transgender heroine in the long running ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch.’
He will become the first African American to step into the character.
Here are some highlights from a recent USA Today interview discussing the landmark role and a very UTS behind-the-scenes look at Mr. Diggs on stage after the jump!
On being feminine:
“I have to say what is most challenging here is being feminine on stage. I can jump off tables all day long, but sitting on a stool while making sure my back is straight and my legs are together – it’s the little things like that you have to work on.”
On the LGBT community:
“I’m proud to be playing a character that is so the forefront of what I think is important today.” Diggs saw Hedwig downtown “when it first came out,” he recalls. “I was in college or right out of college, and I considered myself liberal, but it tripped me out. I’d never known that people lived like that. It makes you realize that at the end of the day, we’re all human beings.”
“In some respects because I’m a black man, there are parallels between this character’s struggles and mine. Maybe mine haven’t been as severe, but I have no problem relating.”
